ToggleEpic Road Trip from Mumbai to Kutch
Introduction
In early February, a group of four friends set out on a memorable adventure from Mumbai to the striking Rann of Kutch in a nearly brand-new Skoda Kodiaq. The journey, which began on February 7th, was a chance for the car to stretch its legs, as it had only been driven about 1,680 kilometers over the previous four months. By the end of the week, they would have added an impressive 2,210 kilometers to that tally.
Day 1: Mumbai to Ahmedabad
The journey kicked off early in the morning at 5 AM. Initially, the friends anticipated a smooth drive over the 535 kilometers to Ahmedabad. However, several factors slowed their progress. They encountered heavy traffic, road repairs, and took breaks for chai and lunch, which turned the trip into a lengthy 12-hour experience.
Regardless of the delays, the Skoda Kodiaq proved to be a comfortable and capable vehicle, making the extended drive more enjoyable. Upon arriving in Ahmedabad, the friends had pre-booked an Airbnb apartment. That evening, they strolled to a local restaurant for an early dinner, eager for the adventures that lay ahead.
Day 2: Ahmedabad to Kutch
The second day started with a delicious breakfast ordered through Zomato, followed by a drive to Bhuj, a city rich in history and culture, famously affected by the 2001 earthquake. Bhuj is also the headquarters of Kutch, India’s largest district, covering an area of 45,674 square kilometers.
Their first stops were Prag Mahal and Aina Mahal, two stunning historical palaces. A knowledgeable guide accompanied them, revealing the fascinating stories behind these architectural gems.
About Prag Mahal and Aina Mahal
- Prag Mahal: Commissioned in the 1860s by King Pragmalji, designed in Italian Gothic style.
- Aina Mahal: Built in the 18th century by Ram Singh Malam, this palace reflects exquisite artistry and rich heritage.
Visitors can admire a collection of artifacts, coins, and paintings within these palaces, showcasing the grandeur of bygone times. Remarkably, both structures sustained relatively minor damage in the earthquake, thanks to effective restoration efforts.
After exploring, the group stayed in a homestay and indulged in local cuisine at a cozy dhaaba-style restaurant named Maru Gamdu, also known as “My Village.”
Day 3: Bhuj to Dhordo (Rann Utsav Tent City)
The next day, the friends headed to Rann Utsav, a beautiful tented city developed in collaboration with Gujarat Tourism. Their all-inclusive package included a tent stay, meals, and a memorable sunset experience at Zero Point, which included both coach and camel cart rides across the breathtaking White Rann.
Highlights of Rann Utsav
- Accommodation: Comfortable tent with all essential amenities.
- Activities: Camel cart ride and cultural programs in the evening.
- Dining: Delicious local food with entertainment until late at night.
The immersive atmosphere, complete with exhibitions of textiles and paintings, created a magical experience. Visitors can easily navigate the sprawling area thanks to electric buggies available within the complex.
Day 4: Exploring Rann Utsav and Beyond
The following morning, they were allowed to enjoy a stunning sunrise at Zero Point, a breathtaking spectacle. After breakfast, the friends checked out and drove to the India Bridge, which requires a special permit for further exploration. Although photography is prohibited, the views of the white desert were indeed spectacular.
While driving towards Dholavira, they traveled through a scenic route known as the "Road to Heaven," which is adorned with viewpoints offering stunning vistas of the landscape lined with the white Rann.
Visiting Dholavira
- Dattatreya Temple: A stop before exploring the ancient sites.
- Dholavira: Home to the ruins of one of the major cities of the Indus Valley Civilization, discovered in the mid-1960s. The site is significant for its history and archaeological importance.
After an enriching exploration trip, they enjoyed a satisfying lunch at Evoke restaurant before checking into another homestay in Gorewali, near Rann Utsav.
Day 5: Return Journey to Mumbai
The final day began at 4 AM, when the group started their journey back to Mumbai, passing through Ahmedabad along the way. This long drive felt seamless and comfortable in the Skoda Kodiaq, which provided a relaxing experience throughout the trip.
Conclusion
The road trip to Kutch was not only an exhilarating adventure but also a chance to witness the diverse culture and breathtaking landscapes of India. The Skoda Kodiaq proved to be a reliable companion, ensuring that the friends enjoyed their travel experience to the fullest. Kutch is truly a unique destination worth visiting at least once in a lifetime!
