Dimensity 7400 Series by MediaTek Expands AI Access for Users

AI is becoming an essential part of how we use our devices. For AI to truly enhance our experience, it needs to be accessible on a wide range of smartphones. MediaTek has introduced the Dimensity 7400 series, which includes major improvements, especially for gaming, and features a stronger dedicated AI chip.
The Dimensity 7400 and 7400X are two new processors from MediaTek. While the more advanced Dimensity 9400 and 8400 are used in high-end smartphones, the 7400 series is designed to cater to the mid to high-range market. Additionally, MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 6400, which will target even lower-priced devices and bring its own set of enhancements.
Both the Dimensity 7400 and 7400X come with an octa-core CPU, featuring four Arm Cortex-A78 and four Cortex-A55 cores. This setup is complemented by a Mali-G615 MC2 GPU, which is particularly effective for gaming applications. Built on a 4nm manufacturing process, these chipsets aim to provide high power efficiency, ensuring better performance while gaming.
One of the standout features of this series is the new 6th-generation NPU (Neural Processing Unit) that MediaTek has developed. MediaTek claims that this new NPU is 15% more powerful than the previous model, the 7300. If accurate, this improvement in AI performance is significant, especially since gains tend to slow down as technology advances. This positions the Dimensity 7400 series as a strong choice for mid-range smartphones, allowing more users to benefit from advanced AI features that were usually available only in high-end devices.
There are a few differences between the two models in the 7400 series. Notably, the 7400X is designed to support dual-display folding devices, while the general specifications between the two chips are largely similar.
Alongside the 7400 series, MediaTek’s Dimensity 6400 is also notable. This chip has fewer Cortex-A76 cores (just half as many) and includes two extra A55 cores. This combination provides good performance at a lower price point, making it suitable for budget smartphones that offer essential features. The focus of the 6400 is on ensuring 5G connectivity and decent gaming capabilities.
MediaTek has announced that the Dimensity 7400 and 7400X will start appearing in smartphones by the first quarter of 2025, while the Dimensity 6400 is already available in the market. With these releases, MediaTek aims to enhance gaming, connectivity, and AI performance, making these features more accessible to users everywhere.
