Francis Ford Coppola Critiques “Madame Web” as One of the Worst Films.

This Sunday, the Oscars will celebrate the best films of the year, but earlier this week, the Razzie Awards made headlines for honoring the worst films of 2024. One of the notable winners was Sony’s superhero movie “Madame Web,” which received three Razzie awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Actress for Dakota Johnson, and Worst Screenplay.
Another superhero film, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” also garnered attention. It led the nominations with seven and won for Screen Combo, recognizing the performances of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. Additionally, it received the award for being a Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel.
Legendary director Francis Ford Coppola received a Razzie for his ambitious film “Megalopolis.” The movie, which was expected to be a major project, earned six nominations and took home the award for Worst Director, as well as the Worst Screenplay. Jon Voight also won the award for Worst Supporting Actor, sharing the honor for his roles in multiple films, including “Reagan,” “Shadow Land,” and “Strangers.”
Coppola addressed his Razzie wins on Instagram, expressing his thoughts on the film industry’s focus on box office earnings. He stated that just as war has no real place in our future, neither does stupidity and politics in the world of art. He seemed proud to accept the Razzie awards, saying it takes courage to go against the trends in today’s filmmaking landscape. He thanked his cast and crew for their hard work on “Megalopolis” and referenced Jacques Tati, a filmmaker who sacrificed much to create his iconic but unsuccessful film “Playtime.”
Despite being a high-budget film with a production cost of $120 million, “Megalopolis” only made $11.5 million at the box office, as reported by Forbes. This stark contrast shows how difficult it can be for ambitious artistic projects to succeed commercially.
In addition to “Madame Web,” several other films were recognized in the Razzie Awards category for Worst Picture. The nominees included “Borderlands,” “Joker: Folie a Deux,” and “Megalopolis,” with “Madame Web” taking home the top dishonor.
The Razzie Awards also acknowledged the year’s worst performances. For the Worst Actor category, nominees included Jack Black for “Dear Santa,” Zachary Levi for “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” and Joaquin Phoenix again for “Joker: Folie a Deux,” with Jerry Seinfeld winning for his role in “Unfrosted.” In the Worst Actress category, Dakota Johnson won for “Madame Web,” beating out fierce competition including Lady Gaga and Cate Blanchett.
Jon Voight claimed the award for Worst Supporting Actor, while Amy Schumer took home the Worst Supporting Actress award for her role in “Unfrosted.” The director award went to Coppola for “Megalopolis,” proving that Razzies are not just about the performances but also about the overall filmmaking process.
Lastly, the Screenplay category also saw “Madame Web” take the lead as the worst, showing that writing plays a significant role in a film’s reception. The Razzie Redeemer award went to Pamela Anderson for her role in “The Last Showgirl,” acknowledging her growth and success after previous criticism.
The Razzie Awards remind everyone that while some films may not resonate well with audiences or critics, they still play a role in the larger conversation about filmmaking and storytelling.
