To use the AI Mode, interested users can join the Search Labs waitlist. However, only paying Google One AI Premium users are getting the chance to use it first. If you join the waitlist and are selected, you’ll receive an email notifying you that you’re welcome to try it out.
How AI Mode Works
This new search feature allows you to ask complicated questions and get more sophisticated answers. For example, instead of just typing “best laptops,” you might ask “What are the best laptops for gaming under $1000?” You can follow up with additional questions to explore more specific aspects, like “What is the battery life of the top-rated gaming laptops?”
AI Mode uses Google’s advanced AI technology, known as Gemini 2.0, to understand and analyze these complex queries. It can help provide in-depth information and compare different sources, making it an excellent tool for detailed research or learning.
Easier Access to AI Mode
Activating AI Mode is simple. On a desktop, you’ll find the ‘AI Mode’ button in the filter options on the left side of your search results. For mobile users, the button is located just beneath the search bar, right alongside Google Lens and Sound Search. This makes it easy to switch to AI Mode and start asking your questions.
Visual Upgrades in AI Mode
Google has also included some visual upgrades in AI Mode. For instance, the text cursor now features Google’s iconic four colors, which change dynamically. This fun element is noticeable during voice searches or when processing results, making the entire search experience more engaging for users.

Another notable change with AI Mode is how your initial search query is displayed. Instead of the traditional floating search bar, the query appears prominently at the top of the page. The sources of information are shown differently too: on mobile, they appear in a carousel format at the top and bottom of the screen, whereas desktop layouts show sources in a compact card on the right.
