Audi A5 Takes Over from A4: What are the Updates?

Until now, the Audi A4 was known for its classic, grounded look and practicality, while the A5 set itself apart as a sportier, more stylish option. Moving forward, Audi plans to simplify its model naming system by categorizing powertrains according to their model numbers. Cars with odd numbers will run on gasoline, whereas those with even numbers will be electric. This means that the upcoming A4 will become a fully electric vehicle. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a new gasoline A4, it will now be branded as the A5, specifically as a sleek four-door hatchback or Sportback, according to Audi’s marketing.
Interestingly, Audi is marketing the new A5 as a sedan, even though last year’s lively coupe and convertible versions have been discontinued.
### A Refreshed Appearance
The 2025 Audi A5 is the first model to feature Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion architecture designed specifically for gas-powered vehicles. This new platform gives the A5 a boost in size; it is now 2.6 inches longer and slightly wider and taller compared to its predecessor, benefiting from a 3.1-inch increase in wheelbase. This change leads to a more graceful look than the previous A4, although the A5’s design hasn’t completely forsaken practicality. The new sloping backlight is not as radical as that of the previous Sportback, prioritizing rear seat headroom and comfort over a purely stylish silhouette. Overall, while the design has been updated for a sleeker appearance, it retains a familiar essence.
The front of the A5 has seen some changes too, including a redesigned grille. While the lighting system remains similar, it now features OLED technology with customizable daytime running light patterns. The taillights also use OLED technology, but without customization options.
Critics might point out that despite the updates, many aspects of Audi’s design language remain unchanged. This could be a double-edged sword, appealing to current customers but possibly failing to attract new ones.
### Inside the Cabin
One of the most notable updates in the A5’s interior is the expansive curved glass panel known as the Digital Stage. This upgrade features three screens: a digital instrument cluster measuring 11.9 inches, a 14.5-inch infotainment and climate control screen, and a 10.9-inch display for the front passenger. This is a significant leap from the 10.1-inch touchscreen found in the 2024 A4.
The rest of the interior retains familiar luxury materials and finishes that Audi is known for. Notably, the rear seats now offer more room thanks to the longer wheelbase, and the cargo space is generous at 26 cubic feet, making it practical alongside its stylish enhancements.
### A Strategic Move
In light of the declining popularity of sedans in the automotive market, Audi’s decision to merge the A4 and A5 Sportback into a single model appears to be a smart one. Although fans of the A5 coupe and convertible may be disappointed by their discontinuation, the new A5 presents itself as a far more attractive and modern design compared to the outgoing A4, while still holding onto some of its predecessor’s sleek characteristics.
While the new design is appreciated, it doesn’t offer dramatic departures from previous models. The overall aesthetic remains beautiful, yet the design choices reflect Audi’s conservative approach, which prioritizes elegance while avoiding radical changes.
