AI in Smartphones: Not a Deciding Factor for Consumers, Yet

A recent survey reveals that artificial intelligence features are not a major driving force in smartphone purchasing decisions. Despite the hype surrounding AI, most consumers remain unconvinced of its value in their daily smartphone usage.

The survey, conducted by SellCell, a platform for selling used tech, polled over 2,000 smartphone users, many of whom own AI-capable iPhones or Samsung Galaxy devices. The results indicate that while users appreciate certain AI features, they are not willing to pay extra for them or switch brands based on AI capabilities alone.

AI Features: Productivity Trumps Novelty

The most popular AI features among respondents were those that enhanced productivity, such as generative writing tools, notification summaries, and prioritized messaging. Samsung users particularly favored the Circle to Search feature, which streamlines information retrieval.

Interestingly, iPhone users expressed a greater interest in AI-driven interfaces compared to Android users. However, only a small percentage of iPhone users would consider switching to Samsung based on improvements in Galaxy AI.

The Price of AI: Consumers Say “No Thanks”

The survey also highlighted a strong reluctance among users to pay for AI features. Around 90% of respondents on both iOS and Android platforms expressed unwillingness to pay for AI subscriptions.

AI’s Value Proposition: Still Unproven

Overall, the survey suggests that consumers remain largely unimpressed with current AI features in smartphones. A significant majority of users on both platforms found AI to be “not very valuable.”

The Future of AI in Smartphones

The survey results indicate that AI features need to demonstrate tangible benefits and improve productivity to gain wider acceptance among smartphone users. Features that assist with note-taking, information management, and streamlining daily tasks are likely to be more appealing than novel but less practical AI applications.

As AI technology continues to evolve, its success in the smartphone market will depend on its ability to seamlessly integrate into users’ lives and provide real value that enhances their daily experiences.
