Studio ZA/UM, known for the acclaimed RPG Disco Elysium, has recently announced its next project, titled C4. Following years marked by key team member departures and legal disputes over the future of the studio, this announcement comes with a much-anticipated glimpse into the next chapter of the company. At a press presentation, ZA/UM shared specifics about C4, revealing that it will delve into the world of espionage.

The event featured Jim Ashilevi, the lead voice-over director for Disco Elysium, and Siim “Kosmos” Sinamäe, a producer and writer, both of whom are contributors to this new title. Sinamäe emphasized from the outset that C4 should not be viewed as a direct sequel, stating, “This is not Disco Elysium 2, this is C4.” He further elaborated that the team has dedicated three years to crafting an entirely original narrative rooted deeply in the theme of espionage, which resonates with the interests of the collective at ZA/UM.

While no gameplay footage was presented, the audience was treated to a brief teaser trailer showcasing a character with a London accent narrating in a style reminiscent of Disco Elysium. The visuals were described as appealing and artistic, setting an intriguing tone for the game. Ashilevi elaborated on the game’s focus: “C4 is all about spy games, allegiances, and betrayals.” He distinguished it from typical espionage narratives like those found in James Bond films—characterized by glamor and heroism—by contrasting it with a more grounded approach akin to the series “Slow Horses,” which focuses on the less glamorous aspects of intelligence work.

This narrative style emphasizes the reality of espionage, where the characters might not achieve fame or accolades. Instead of glorifying success, C4 aims to create a space in which “failure is a joy in itself,” according to Ashilevi. The concept of “failing forward” is a significant theme that sets this game apart, promising a unique approach to storytelling in the gameplay context.

This announcement is especially notable in light of the recent departures of key figures like Robert Kurvitz, the designer, writer Helen Hindpere, and artist Aleksander Rostov from ZA/UM in 2021. Their exit triggered a series of legal battles and public discussions surrounding workplace culture at the studio. Despite the challenging circumstances, C4 represents a fresh start for ZA/UM, and fans are keen to see how the original team can navigate this new direction.
