You have to have that little something extra to stand out in the gaming world among a dozen imitations that come out every week. Or, as Tormentis demonstrates, you can put two genres together and create something that sounds delightfully interesting. Early Access launched on Steam in July, but now you can enjoy it on the go on Android.
Tormentis is an asynchronous multiplayer action RPG that plays like Diablo or Path of Exile, complete with that almost top-down action gameplay. It’s still fun, of course, but then 4 Hands Games added a few dungeons and kicked the concept up a notch. Tormentis lets you build your own trap-laden levels and take on an entire community of others.
Your dungeons can be built from a wide range of rooms that can be connected to each other. Fill them with a variety of traps and monsters, or use the terrain against players with a variety of decorations that can create dead ends or difficult to access areas. There is a disadvantage though; you must successfully complete it once before releasing it to the public.
The other side of the coin comes when you are the one invading. You can fight with one of three types of weapons which will determine your available abilities. These can be increased with the talent tree; there are no classes so you can create your own custom build. And of course, what style of Diablo would be complete without a huge amount of loot?
By completing dungeons you will gain a vast arsenal of equipment, which can be equipped or placed in the auction house to trade with others. There are over 40 legendary items to find, perfect for the rare hunters among us. Finally, you can tackle seasonal events, like the currently ongoing Winter Festival, for limited seasonal decorations and items.
Tormentis is available for download from Google Play. The mobile version is free and ad-supported, but you can, via an IAP, go ad-free if you want uninterrupted dungeon looting.
