Emphasizing Vehicle Safety in India

Introduction to Vehicle Safety Concerns

For many years, vehicle safety was not a major concern for car manufacturers in India. However, in recent times, there has been a noticeable increase in public awareness about the importance of vehicular safety. One significant development in this area is the establishment of Bharat NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) on October 1, 2023. This initiative aims to create better safety standards for cars entering the Indian market.

What is Bharat NCAP?

Bharat NCAP is a voluntary program designed to assess the crash safety performance of new vehicles. Its implementation began at the end of 2023, and it aims to improve the safety levels of cars through rigorous testing. The cars that have already gone through testing as part of this program include popular models such as:

  • Tata Harrier
  • Tata Safari
  • Tata Curvv
  • Tata Nexon
  • Hyundai Tucson
  • Skoda Kushaq
  • Mahindra Thar Roxx
  • Mahindra BE 6
  • Mahindra XEV 9e
  • Citroen C3

The Future: Bharat NCAP 2.0

With an eye on future advancements, Bharat NCAP plans to introduce an updated version known as Bharat NCAP 2.0. This will incorporate enhanced crash testing protocols, especially focusing on Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). ADAS features help in preventing accidents by providing warnings or even taking control of the vehicle in dangerous situations.

The new testing protocols are expected to be ready by 2027, coupled with the establishment of a dedicated testing facility near Pune by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). The primary goal is to tailor these systems to better suit Indian driving conditions.

Localizing Safety Standards

Ujjwala Karla, Deputy Director at ARAI, emphasizes the need to adapt testing protocols to address specific Indian driving scenarios. Discussions are currently underway to ensure that both the systems and their testing are more in line with local needs. This effort is crucial to making vehicles safer for Indian consumers.

Current Crash Testing Landscape

Bharat NCAP currently utilizes crash testing protocols similar to those employed by Global NCAP. However, there is a push to modify and prioritize the protocol for the Indian context. Standards like AIS 185, which cover ADAS features, may also see revisions that focus on the protection of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists.

Addressing the Road Safety Crisis

India has experienced a staggering number of road accidents, with around 480,000 recorded cases leading to approximately 172,000 deaths in 2023 alone. A significant portion of these incidents, around 80%, can be attributed to human error. By integrating active safety systems like ADAS, there is an opportunity to significantly reduce these numbers.

These systems can play a crucial role in saving lives and making our roads safer. Additionally, lowering the costs of ADAS would open up opportunities for more consumers, encouraging widespread adoption of safety technologies.

Conclusion: A Clear Road Ahead

With the aim of improving vehicle safety standards in India, Bharat NCAP represents a positive step forward. The upcoming Bharat NCAP 2.0 is anticipated to further enhance these standards by integrating advanced technologies tailored to local driving conditions. As safety becomes a higher priority among manufacturers and consumers alike, the outlook for vehicle safety in India is brighter than ever.

Investing in vehicle safety standards not only helps save lives but also promotes a culture of responsible driving. Everyone has a role to play in making our roads safer, from manufacturers to consumers. By emphasizing safety, we can pave the way for a future where every journey is a safe one.
