Camping Under the Stars with a BMW GSA 1200 in Vagamon, Kerala

My Solo Camping Adventure to Vagamon on a BMW GSA
BHPian genesmotorides recently shared their exciting experience with fellow bike enthusiasts:
Hello everyone! I often work abroad and my yearly vacations are carefully planned and limited. Last year, my wife and I rode our BMW GSA from Cochin to Bhutan and back. This time, I decided to take a solo overnight camping trip to Vagamon, which is just a short ride of about 75 kilometers from my home.
Preparing for the Adventure
The day before the trip, I packed my gear onto the BMW GSA 1200. I used Moskomoto 35-liter soft panniers, a 40-liter duffle bag, and a GIVI 42-liter Aluminum top box to hold everything I needed. My luggage included:
- Quechua 2-person tent
- Quechua inflatable mattress
- Bedspread, blanket, and pillow
- Cooking utensils and a gas stove
- Stanley coffee maker
- Table and chair
- Toolbox and an air pump
- Air compressor and jump starter
- Lights and two thermoses (1.5 liters each)
- Cameras: Insta 360 Ace Pro, Insta 360 X2, and DJI Mini 3 Pro drone
- Light clothing and an emergency medical kit
My riding gear included a BMW jacket and pants for protection, an Airoh Commander carbon helmet, TCX riding boots, a Cardo Packtalk Bluetooth, and Alpinestar riding gloves. I used Quadlock phone mounts to keep my phone secure while riding.
The Journey Begins
On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, I left home around 08:00 after enjoying a hearty breakfast prepared by my mom. The ride to Vagamon was smooth and leisurely, with frequent stops along the way. I picked up snacks for the night in Pambanar town and arrived at my camping site around 14:00.
Orange Valley Camp
The Orange Valley Camp is a little off the main road, but accessible by both cars and motorcycles. The camping grounds are fully fenced and have a well-kept grassy area. The amenities include well-maintained washrooms, a cooking area, sufficient nighttime lighting, and a caretaker on site. The stunning views of the valley make it a perfect camping spot.
Setting Up Camp
The camp management kindly allowed me to pitch my own tent for a small fee. I set up my tent by 17:00 and relaxed in my chair with a coffee while watching the sun set behind me—a chilly breeze made the moment even more perfect.
Unexpected Company
As I prepared dinner, a friendly stray dog joined me. He stayed close by until I left the next day.
A Starry Night
The night sky was filled with stars, and I went to bed around 20:00, feeling content and peaceful.
Early Morning at the Camp
On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, I woke up at 05:00. I made myself a cup of black coffee, freshened up at the campsite, packed my gear, and got ready for a 380-kilometer ride to Danushkodi.

A Message to Fellow Travelers
Before I end my adventure summary, I want to remind everyone who travels to manage their own waste. If the places you visit do not provide trash services, take your trash with you—including cigarette butts. Let’s work together to keep our planet clean!
