Cleaning Your Wireless Earbuds and AirPods: How to Eliminate Bacteria

My Beats Studio Pro headphones are an essential part of my daily routine. Whether I’m at the gym, taking a walk, or doing chores, I have them close by. With all this use, they tend to accumulate dirt, earwax, and bacteria, which can lead to decreased audio quality and even health issues like ear infections. Regular cleaning is crucial not only to maintain their performance but also to ensure they are safe to use. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to properly clean your wireless headphones without damaging them.

How to Clean Your AirPods

Cleaning methods for AirPods and similar wireless earbuds are straightforward:

  1. Use Alcohol Wipes: The easiest way to clean the exterior of your AirPods is by using disinfecting wipes. Be sure to avoid the mesh part of the speakers and dry them off with a clean cloth afterward. The alcohol wipes dry quickly, so there’s no need to wait long before using them again.

  2. Clean the Speaker Mesh: For the microphone and speaker areas, use a dry cotton swab and a soft-bristled brush. Be gentle to avoid pushing earwax deeper into the meshes, making it hard to remove.

  3. Removing Stubborn Earwax: If earwax is still stubbornly stuck, you can use a product like Fun-Tak. Warm it in your hands, press it against the speaker, and use a wooden toothpick to scrape off any residual wax.

Cleaning Earbuds with Removable Silicone Tips

If your earbuds have detachable silicone tips, cleaning them becomes even easier:

  1. Detach the Tips: Start by removing the silicone tips from the earbuds.

  2. Soak in Soapy Water: Place them in warm, soapy water for about 30 minutes. Gently agitate the water to help loosen any stubborn dirt.

  3. Wipe and Dry: After soaking, use a soft cloth or a cotton swab to remove any lingering dirt or earwax. Let the silicone tips air dry completely before reattaching them to your earbuds.

If your earbuds don’t come with silicone tips, you can easily find replacements online.

Cleaning Over-Ear Wireless Headphones

Over-ear headphones, such as the Apple AirPods Max or Beats Studio Pro, require a bit more attention:

  1. Avoid Water: Never run your headphones under water. Instead, use a disinfectant wipe to clean the headband.

  2. Soak Ear Cushions: If the ear cushions can be removed, soak them in a solution of one teaspoon of liquid laundry detergent mixed with one cup of warm water. After soaking, wipe them thoroughly and let them dry flat for at least a day.

Cleaning the Charging Case

Your charging case also needs regular cleaning to prevent dirt build-up:

  1. Wipe the Outside: Use a dry, lint-free cloth to clean the exterior of the charging case.

  2. Damp Cleaning: If necessary, you can slightly dampen the cloth with water or rubbing alcohol. Just be cautious not to let any liquid enter the charging ports.

General Cleaning Tips for Headphones

Here are some additional tips to help you keep your headphones clean and in good condition:

  • No Submerging: Always avoid fully submerging your earbuds or headphones in water, even if they are labeled as water-resistant or waterproof.

  • Use Cotton Swabs: They are excellent for reaching small areas like speaker and microphone meshes.

  • Stay Clear of Sharp Objects: Avoid using safety pins or other sharp tools to clean your headphones, as they can damage the delicate components.

  • Prevent Liquid Damage: Make sure not to let any liquid enter the openings of your headphones.

  • Keep Away from Harmful Products: Avoid exposing your headphones to items that could stain or damage them, such as lotions, perfumes, and detergents.

By following these cleaning methods and tips, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your headphones while ensuring they perform at their best. Regular maintenance will also help prevent any potential health issues related to dirt and bacteria. Enjoy your music and podcasts safely!
