According to recent information from the analysis firm Circana (NPD), more than 40% of gaming time on these consoles in January 2025 was dedicated to the top 10 live service games. Remarkably, over 70% of players engaged with at least one of these games during the same month.
Although the full list of these popular games has not been completely revealed, some big names are thought to be included, like Call of Duty, Fortnite, ROBLOX, Marvel Rivals, and GTA Online. These titles are attracting large audiences on both Xbox and PlayStation platforms. Mat Piscatella, an executive at Circana, shared that the gaming trend has shifted from players switching between expensive, purchased games to spending a lot of their time on free live service games that are often of high quality.
Historically, gamers would purchase and then play various big titles. Now, however, the appeal of live service games is strong, making it difficult to resist playing them, especially since many are free. Piscatella noted that players now find it challenging to transition back to purchasing new games when there are such compelling free options available.
Yet it’s important to recognize that success in this area doesn’t guarantee job security. Recently, it was reported that Marvel Rivals would be laying off some of its staff, even though the game is quite popular. Additionally, many live service games have faced setbacks, with several titles having to shut down their servers over the years. One of the more recent examples of this is MultiVersus, which was discontinued despite initially inviting excitement.
Nonetheless, the resurgence and popularity of live service games highlight the potential for significant financial success in this space if developers can create engaging content that resonates with players. The trend suggests a shift in how games are consumed and how players choose to spend their gaming time, favoring long-lasting experiences over short-term purchases.
