During an interview with Fox Business, Musk speculated that the cyberattack might have originated from IP addresses located in Ukraine. He did not provide any concrete evidence to support this assertion, and many cybersecurity professionals cautioned that just because an IP address is traced to a certain location does not necessarily mean the attack originated there. It is common for cyberattacks to involve routing through various locations to obscure the true source.

At the peak of the outage, around 10 a.m. Eastern Time (2 p.m. UTC), nearly 40,000 users reported issues accessing the platform, as reported by Downdetector, a popular website that tracks service outages. The number of complaints fluctuated throughout the day, dropping initially before rising again to about 35,000 before decreasing once more.

Since Musk’s acquisition of X in 2022, the platform has faced a number of technical difficulties, leading to user frustration and raising questions about the platform’s stability. The service outages, while not uncommon in the digital world, have drawn particular scrutiny given Musk’s high-profile ownership and the changes he has implemented since taking over the platform.
