Experiencing Freeze Shock and Ice Burn Effects in Pokémon Go

Understanding Freeze Shock and Ice Burn in Pokémon Go
In Pokémon Go, players have the chance to experience various Adventure Effects, particularly Freeze Shock and Ice Burn, which are unique to Black Kyurem and White Kyurem. Both of these effects were introduced during the Go Tour: Unova event, bringing exciting new gameplay features to trainers.
Adventure Effects add special bonuses to your game experience. They first appeared in 2024 with the Go Tour: Sinnoh, featuring effects like Roar of Time and Spacial Rend. New effects continue to be added to the game, including Sunsteel Strike and Moongeist during the Go Fest 2024 event.
Both Freeze Shock and Ice Burn are designed to alter how Pokémon behave in the game, making it easier for you to catch them. For these effects to work, you’ll need to fuse specific Pokémon to access them, giving added depth and strategy to the gameplay.
The Freeze Shock Adventure Effect
To utilize the Freeze Shock Adventure Effect, you must have a Black Kyurem. This Pokémon is created by fusing a regular Kyurem, who knows the move Glaciate, with Zekrom. Glaciate is an Ice-type charged attack that is exclusive, meaning you’ll only have it if you caught Kyurem during special events or used an Elite Charged TM.
How Freeze Shock Works
When you activate Freeze Shock, it effectively freezes any Pokémon you encounter, preventing them from moving in the wild or during raids. This makes it much easier to catch them. You can use this effect alongside any Pokémon Go accessories you may have. The freeze lasts for 10 minutes by default, but you can extend it.
Cost to Use Freeze Shock
- To use Freeze Shock for 10 minutes, it costs 5,000 Stardust and 5 Kyurem Candy.
- You can extend the duration in 10-minute intervals, up to a total of 2 hours, costing a maximum of 60,000 Stardust and 60 Kyurem Candy.
- If you want to stretch it to 24 hours, be prepared to spend 720,000 Stardust and 720 Kyurem Candy.
During the Go Tour: Unova, you can also unlock a bonus that extends Freeze Shock’s duration through the Tour Pass, but remember that this bonus only lasts while the Tour Pass is active.
As of now, Black Kyurem cannot learn Freeze Shock by means of Charged or Elite Charged TMs, and it must not be used alongside another Adventure Effect.
In battle, Freeze Shock has different power levels:
- Trainer Battles: 120
- Gyms and Raids: 160
The Ice Burn Adventure Effect
The Ice Burn Adventure Effect, on the other hand, is exclusive to White Kyurem, achieved by fusing a Kyurem with Glaciate with Reshiram. Like Freeze Shock, you can only obtain Glaciate through specific events or an Elite Charged TM.
How Ice Burn Works
When you activate Ice Burn, it slows down the target ring of the Pokémon you’re trying to catch, making it easier for you to achieve Excellent Throws. You can also use Ice Burn with Pokémon Go accessories. Initially, it lasts for 10 minutes, similar to Freeze Shock.
Cost to Use Ice Burn
- The cost for Ice Burn for 10 minutes is 5,000 Stardust and 5 Kyurem Candy.
- Like Freeze Shock, you can extend it in 10-minute increments, totaling up to 60,000 Stardust and 60 Kyurem Candy for 2 hours.
- To extend Ice Burn to 24 hours, prepare to spend 720,000 Stardust and 720 Kyurem Candy.
Just as with Freeze Shock, during the Go Tour: Unova, Ice Burn’s duration can be extended through a bonus obtainable via the Tour Pass, which will also expire when the Tour Pass ends.
Currently, White Kyurem cannot learn Ice Burn via Charged or Elite Charged TMs, and it also cannot be active with another Adventure Effect.
In battles, Ice Burn has different power levels as well:
- Trainer Battles: 120
- Gyms and Raids: 90
How to Utilize Adventure Effects in Pokémon Go
To make use of Adventure Effects in Pokémon Go, you first need to have the appropriate Pokémon that knows the effect. For Freeze Shock, you’ll need Black Kyurem, while for Ice Burn, you’ll need White Kyurem. Unlike these effects, Glaciate can be learned via an Elite Charged TM or during special events.
Remember that you cannot have more than one Adventure Effect active at the same time. If you want to switch effects, you will either have to wait until your current effect expires or end it manually. Pokémon Go does notify you if you attempt to use a second effect, so keep this in mind as you strategize.
Steps to Use an Adventure Effect
- Ensure you have either Black Kyurem (for Freeze Shock) or White Kyurem (for Ice Burn), both created by fusion.
- Open your Pokémon Storage and locate the Pokémon you need.
- Access its Summary page and scroll to the Adventure Effects section.
- Select ‘Use’ to control how much Stardust and Candy you wish to spend based on how long you want the effect to last.
- Press ‘Use’ again to activate the effect and enjoy your enhanced gameplay experience!
Keep the effects’ duration and costs in mind as you decide how to use them effectively during your gaming sessions. Happy gaming!
