A Relaxing Vacation to Florida: Sun, Sand, and Adventure

Introduction

This vacation was meant to be all about relaxation, sunbathing on beautiful beaches, and enjoying the pristine aqua blue waters of Florida. With no specific plans in mind, the journey began with the idea of simply unwinding and experiencing the joyful atmosphere of the holiday season.

Choosing Florida

A Change from Tradition

Every December, we traditionally visit Boston to spend time with family. However, this year, we decided to break from our routine. My sister and her family were heading to Puerto Rico, inspiring us to find a warm destination to escape the cold and rainy weather back home.

Where to Go?

We initially thought about visiting Hawaii, but the costs for flights and accommodation were sky-high during December, with hotel rates hitting $500 per night. Next, we considered Cancun, Mexico, known for its beautiful beaches, but again found prices to be too steep. Finally, we settled on Florida, known as the "Sunshine State," which was on our wish list for a long time.

Planning the Trip

Ideal Timing

The best time to visit Florida is between December and February when the weather is typically warm, ranging from the 70s to 80s. Booking our flights and accommodations was essential since we didn’t want to be caught in the oppressive humidity that Florida is known for during other seasons.

Flights and Accommodation

We booked roundtrip flights from Seattle to Miami and chose accommodations that suited our plan. Our stay included two nights in Key West and six nights in Miami. We opted for Hilton in Key West and Hyatt Place in Miami, ensuring comfort and convenience throughout our stay.

The Road Trip

Exciting Driving Plans

One particular activity on my bucket list was to drive from Miami to Key West. This iconic 200-mile journey along the Atlantic Ocean promised stunning views and a thrilling experience. To make this adventure even more memorable, I wanted to drive an open-top muscle car, specifically a Ford Mustang.

Rental Car Selection

I had my heart set on a V8, 5.0-liter Mustang model, but unfortunately, those were few and priced quite high. Instead, I rented a base model EcoBoost Premium, which was a compromise. Although it had only 320 horsepower, it still offered a fun driving experience. The rental cost was $120 per day, including insurance, which was manageable.

Enjoying the Vacation

The Focus of Our Trip

The primary goal of this vacation was relaxation. We wanted to spend our days lying on the beach, enjoying the sun, and splashing in the ocean. Being a food enthusiast, I was also eager to experience various cuisines during our stay and decided to explore American, Cuban, Mexican, Venezuelan, and Peruvian dishes, completely leaving out Indian food for the duration of the trip.

The Long Flight

A Not-So-Great Start

The long flight of over six hours could be a real challenge. Sitting for that long can become uncomfortable and boring, but the anticipation of the warm sun and sandy beaches kept our spirits high.

Driving to Key West

The Journey Begins

The most thrilling part of the trip was undoubtedly the drive to Key West. With the top down on the Mustang and the fresh ocean breeze flowing through, we were ready for an unforgettable adventure. The roads offered scenic views, filled with bright blue waters and swaying palm trees that made the journey all the more enjoyable.

Florida’s Culinary Delights

A Foodie’s Adventure

One of the most exciting aspects of our vacation was exploring the local cuisine. Throughout the eight days in Florida, we delighted in the taste of various dishes. From freshly caught seafood to savory Cuban sandwiches and vibrant Mexican tacos, every meal was a new adventure for our taste buds.

Conclusion

This journey to Florida turned out to be a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and culinary exploration. With spontaneous decisions leading us away from our typical vacation habits, we discovered the joy of the open road and the beauty of the Sunshine State.

Driving along the coast, soaking up the sun, and indulging in delicious local flavors made for a memorable vacation that we will cherish for years to come. Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach or enjoy thrilling drives, Florida has something special for everyone, making it a must-visit destination.
