Exploring the Scenic Routes of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Train
Experience the Charm of One of England’s Oldest Minimum-Gauge Railways
By a curious traveler, NiInJa
Last weekend, I embarked on a memorable adventure to the Lake District in England. Although the weather was not promising with cold winds and a rainy forecast, I was excited to ride on one of the historic smallest gauge trains, affectionately called the “La’al Ratty.”
What is the La’al Ratty?
The La’al Ratty is owned by the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway Company. This fascinating railway is one of the oldest minimum-gauge railways still in operation. It serves not only as a unique tourist attraction but also connects five charming locations in the picturesque Esk valley.
The railway is equipped with a well-organized signaling system, loops, a car shed, and a maintenance yard. These features make it function just like the standard trains that we usually travel on.
A Fun Journey on the Train
Our one-way ride took around 40 minutes from Ravenglass to Dalegarth, resulting in a total of about an hour and twenty minutes of delightful journeying aboard this charming little train.
Small Size, Big Fun
Everything on the railway is designed smaller than usual, from the station and platform to the signal box, track changing levers, and even the turn-table. The 15-inch track gauge certainly adds a whimsical touch that is sure to delight both children and adults alike.
We began our journey at Ravenglass station, which is located right next to the larger “real” train station in the Lake District.
The History Behind the Tracks
The train line was originally built in the 1870s to transport iron ore from the mines in the Esk valley. Once the ore reached the nearby station, standard gauge trains would take it onward. Public transportation commenced on this railway in 1876, initially featuring a track gauge of 2 feet 9 inches.
However, the railway experienced several closures and re-openings between the late 1800s. In 1915, a model train enthusiast named Wenman Joseph Bassett-Lowke reconfigured the entire railway to the current 15-inch gauge, leading to a successful restart. Most of today’s engines date back to that era.
After World War II, modernization led to a decline in operations, but in the 1960s, a private company was formed to revive the railway, driven by popular demand and the affection of railway enthusiasts.
Journeying in Comfort
The train offers both first-class and open-air coaches for passengers to enjoy stunning views during the ride. We were fortunate to sit in the last coach on the way there, which became the first coach on our return journey, much like sitting in a caboose.
As we traveled, the train reached speeds of about 23 miles per hour, making for an exciting ride through the scenic landscapes.
A Scenic Stop at Dalegarth Station
Upon arrival at Dalegarth station, we enjoyed the beauty of the surroundings, despite having to deal with a challenging situation involving one of our children. We had only ten minutes to soak in the views before boarding our return train.
The Unique Experience of Steam Trains
The classic steam engine that pulled our train was fascinating. Surprisingly, the amount of smoke and steam produced was manageable, allowing us to appreciate the experience without overwhelming discomfort.
After our journey, the process of detaching the engine and rotating it on the turntable by hand was an engaging sight that showcased the charm of heritage railways.
Exploring the Station and Museum
Next to the station, there is a maintenance shed filled with exhibits that replicate standard gauge railways. Here, you can find old coaches and other railway artifacts.
A Peek into the Past
The museum offers insights into the heritage of rail transport, featuring models, dioramas, and various artifacts. Visitors can marvel at scale models of trains and engines, gaining a better understanding of the rich history of this unique railway.
A Journey to Remember
This delightful trip on the La’al Ratty was filled with scenic beauty, history, and unforgettable experiences. Whether you are a railway enthusiast or simply seeking a unique adventure, this railway offers something special for everyone.
If you’re planning a visit to the Lake District, consider riding the La’al Ratty. It’s a charming experience that connects you not just to the landscape but also to the fascinating history of this remarkable railway.
