February 2025 C-Segment Sedan Sales: Virtus Leads the Market

February 2025 C-Segment Sedan Sales Overview
The market for C-segment sedans in India is facing tough times as consumer preferences shift towards SUVs. As a result, the conventional three-box sedan design is becoming less appealing to buyers. Recent sales figures illustrate this trend, with three out of five sedans in this category showing a drop in sales compared to the same period last year. Notably, one of the two sedans that experienced positive sales growth will soon exit the market.
Maruti Suzuki has announced it will discontinue the Ciaz, which ranks third in sales for this segment. Although the Ciaz showed a significant increase in sales, its performance was largely influenced by aggressive discounting and measures to clear existing stock.
Leading the sales for February 2025 is the Volkswagen Virtus, which sold 1,837 units, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 13%. Volkswagen’s strategy appears to be resonating well with consumers, enabling it to maintain a strong position in a challenging market. Following closely is Hyundai with its Verna, which found 1,207 buyers. However, the Verna faced a considerable decline of 28% in sales compared to last year.
In third place is the Maruti Ciaz, with 1,097 units sold, marking an impressive 128% increase year over year. This growth may have been spurred by the end of its production, as consumers rushed to buy the remaining stock. In fourth place, the Skoda Slavia sold 901 units, which is a 12% decrease from its previous year’s figures. Rounding out the list is the Honda City, selling a mere 889 units and experiencing a significant decline of 25% in its sales.
As the Ciaz departs from the market, there are questions about where its customers might go. Will they choose the Honda City, which has a well-established reputation? Or will they lean towards the Hyundai Verna, known for its value? Some might even opt for the Volkswagen Virtus or the Skoda Slavia, both of which offer modern features and design.
The C-segment sedan market’s continuous contraction raises interesting prospects for automotive manufacturers and buyers alike. With the evolving preferences of consumers, manufacturers will need to adapt their strategies to maintain relevance in a highly competitive landscape. Keeping a close watch on future sales trends will be essential for understanding how this sector will transform, especially in the face of rising SUV popularity.
