Samsung has taken the lead in the foldable phone market, shipping significantly more devices compared to competitors like Google. Samsung started this trend in 2019 with the launch of the Galaxy Fold, giving it a notable head start of four years over Google. Recently, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has gained two new features that were originally popularized by Google’s Pixel Fold and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, following the rollout of the One UI 7 update.
One of the standout features included in this update is called “Swipe to continue.” This functionality allows users to seamlessly transition apps that were used on the larger internal display to the cover screen when the device is closed. By swiping up from the bottom of the Lock Screen on the cover screen, users can quickly access these previously opened apps. However, there’s a time limit; if users don’t act fast, the screen will lock, and they’ll miss the opportunity to open the app directly from the cover screen.
For those who prefer a different approach, there’s an option in the settings called “Always.” When enabled, this setting will automatically launch the app that was active on the internal display onto the cover screen once the phone is closed. Another choice, labeled “Never,” ensures that the screen locks immediately upon closing the device, thus preventing any app from transferring to the cover display. It’s important to note that not all apps may support this feature, meaning some may not transition between the two screens.
In addition to “Swipe to continue,” Samsung has also integrated an auto-hiding taskbar in the Galaxy Z Fold 6, similar to the feature found in the Pixel Fold models. This taskbar can be displayed with a simple half-swipe up from the bottom, akin to how the taskbar functions on Apple’s iPad. Samsung chose not to include this auto-hiding feature in the previous Android 13 or Android 14 versions, opting instead for a static taskbar that remains visible at all times.
The introduction of these features marks a significant step for the Galaxy Z Fold 6, particularly as these updates are currently exclusive to this model. Other Galaxy Z Fold devices are expected to receive the full One UI 7 update and these features in the upcoming month, expanding the benefits beyond just the latest model.
The widespread interest in Samsung’s foldable innovations reflects a growing trend in mobile technology that focuses on enhancing user experience through versatility and productivity. As more consumers look for devices that combine functionality and portability, the competition among brands like Samsung and Google is likely to intensify, leading to even more advancements in the foldable phone sector.
By continually evolving their software and integrating successful features from competing devices, Samsung is positioning itself to maintain its leadership in the foldable market. As these updates become available to a broader audience, users can look forward to leveraging the unique capabilities that foldable smartphones offer.
