Hyundai Developing New 7-Seater Hybrid SUV for India

Hyundai is reportedly developing a new 7-seater hybrid SUV, codenamed Ni1i, for the Indian market. Positioned between the Alcazar and the Tucson, this new model is expected to launch in 2026 and will be produced at Hyundai’s Talegaon plant.

The Ni1i will be a significant addition to Hyundai’s SUV lineup, marking the company’s first foray into hybrid technology in the Indian SUV market. This move reflects the growing demand for fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles in India.

The Ni1i will compete with established rivals like the Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector Plus, and Tata Safari. Its hybrid powertrain is expected to be a key differentiator, offering improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

Design and Powertrain

The Ni1i is rumored to draw inspiration from the long-wheelbase Tucson sold in China, providing ample space and targeting a premium market segment. It is expected to feature a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine with a larger battery pack and electric motor for the hybrid variant. Hyundai also plans to offer standard petrol and diesel powertrain options, along with a choice of gearboxes to cater to different customer preferences.

Production and Market Outlook

Hyundai aims to produce approximately 50,000 units of the Ni1i annually. With Maruti Suzuki and Toyota already offering strong hybrid SUVs and Mahindra rumored to be exploring similar technology, the Ni1i will enter a competitive landscape.

The growing popularity of strong hybrid vehicles in India is driving automakers to expand their alternative fuel offerings. The Ni1i’s hybrid technology, combined with its spacious design and premium features, is likely to make it a compelling option for Indian consumers seeking a fuel-efficient and family-friendly SUV.
