KTM’s Plans to Replace 125 Duke and RC 125 with New 160cc Models
KTM, the popular motorcycle manufacturer, is set to change its entry-level motorcycle offerings in India. The well-known 125 Duke and RC 125 models will soon be replaced by new 160cc versions. This strategic move is designed to improve competition with Yamaha’s successful lineup of 155cc bikes, specifically the R15 V4 and MT-15 models.
Competing with Yamaha’s 155cc Motorcycle Segment
The push to introduce 160 Duke and RC 160 models is largely motivated by Yamaha’s strong sales in the 155cc motorcycle market. The R15 V4 and MT-15 together sell approximately 20,000 units each month, making this segment quite lucrative. By launching the 160cc models, KTM aims to attract buyers looking for better performance and features that fit into the same price range as their competitors.
Design and Structural Features
Both the new 160 Duke and RC 160 will be based on the framework of KTM’s existing 200cc models. The design of the 160 Duke is expected to resemble the current second-generation style found in the 200 Duke. On the other hand, the RC 160 will adopt a more aggressive look that matches the latest designs of the RC 200 and RC 390.
These motorcycles will feature KTM’s signature trellis frame. They will also come equipped with top-notch components like 43mm upside-down front forks and a rear monoshock suspension system. In terms of features, the new models are likely to be equipped with the same advanced technology as the 200cc bikes, including a dual-channel ABS and a modern LCD instrument panel.
Engine and Performance Details
The new 160cc engine will be modified from KTM’s present 200cc engine but will be adjusted in size for this new category. It is anticipated that this engine will generate between 19 to 20 horsepower, a significant rise from the 14.5 horsepower produced by the current 125cc models. This boost in power will give the new 160cc bikes an edge over Yamaha’s 155cc engines, which deliver around 18.4 horsepower.
Moreover, KTM intends to make sure that the 160cc models are not seen as direct competitors to the 200cc bikes, which offer approximately 25 horsepower. This segmentation aims to make it clear to customers where each bike fits in within the brand’s lineup.
Expected Pricing and Release Timeline
KTM is expected to set the price for the upcoming 160 Duke and RC 160 in a way that competes favorably with Yamaha’s current offerings. However, it is unclear whether KTM will price them lower than the R15 V4 or MT-15 models. Currently, the 125 Duke and RC 125 are priced at around Rs. 1.81 lakh and Rs. 1.92 lakh respectively, so it is anticipated that the new 160cc models will be priced similarly or perhaps even a little higher.
KTM is likely to reveal the 160 Duke and RC 160 around mid-2025. This launch may coincide with the festive season in India, with both models potentially debuting together or shortly after one another.
More Attractive Options for Entry-Level Buyers
With the release of these 160cc bikes, KTM aims to offer greater value to novice motorcycle buyers. These new models will provide an exciting blend of enhanced performance, appealing features, and the brand’s sporty aesthetic. For those considering entering the KTM family, the introduction of the 160 Duke and RC 160 is set to promise more bang for their buck, delivering both quality and excitement in the entry-level motorcycle segment.
