Maruti Suzuki is reportedly set to introduce its indigenously developed strong hybrid technology in the upcoming Fronx facelift, slated for launch next year. This move signifies a major step in the company’s strategy to expand its hybrid offerings and cater to the growing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles in India.
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx, launched at Auto Expo 2023, has been a remarkable success story, achieving 1 lakh domestic sales in record time. Building on this momentum, the company is now poised to further enhance the Fronx’s appeal with the introduction of advanced hybrid technology.
Maruti Suzuki, in collaboration with Toyota, has already tasted success with strong hybrid versions of models like the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Now, the company is looking to bring this technology to its mass-market lineup, with the Fronx leading the way.
This strategic move aligns with Maruti Suzuki’s broader electrification plans, which include a significant push towards electric vehicles in 2025. However, the company also recognizes the importance of hybrid technology as a bridge towards full electrification, offering a compelling combination of performance and fuel efficiency.
The Fronx facelift is expected to feature Maruti Suzuki’s in-house developed strong hybrid system, likely based on the Z12E engine. This advanced hybrid technology is also anticipated to be incorporated into future models, including the next-generation Baleno and a rumored compact MPV.
If successful, the 2025 Fronx could become the first compact SUV in India to feature this localized strong hybrid system. With a potential fuel efficiency of over 30 kmpl, the hybrid Fronx is poised to become a strong contender in the rapidly growing hybrid vehicle market.
In addition to the hybrid powertrain, the updated Fronx is expected to receive subtle cosmetic enhancements and interior upgrades, further enhancing its appeal.
Maruti Suzuki’s focus on affordability and high fuel efficiency is evident in its approach to hybrid technology. Similar to Nissan’s e-Power system, the company’s hybrid system is likely to utilize the petrol engine primarily as a range extender, optimizing efficiency by charging the battery rather than directly powering the wheels.
With the introduction of its in-house strong hybrid technology in the Fronx, Maruti Suzuki is set to make a significant impact on the Indian automotive landscape, offering consumers a compelling and fuel-efficient option in the popular compact SUV segment.
