MG Windsor EV: A New Leader in the Indian Electric Vehicle Market

Introduction to MG Windsor EV

The MG Windsor EV, launched just over five months ago, has quickly become India’s most popular electric vehicle (EV). It has maintained the top spot as the best-selling EV in the country for four consecutive months, from October 2024 to January 2025. With production numbers exceeding 15,000 units, MG Motor India is experiencing strong interest in this innovative vehicle, even in the face of upcoming upgrades to its production facility.

Production and Market Response

MG Motor India is currently making adjustments to its manufacturing operations at the Halol facility to accommodate future product expansions. While this upgrade aims to enhance long-term production capabilities, a temporary slowdown in output is anticipated for February, which may lead to a slight drop in wholesale figures during that month. However, customer interest in the MG Windsor remains robust, with around 200 new bookings being made daily.

Future Plans: Expanding the Lineup

Looking ahead, MG Motor India will soon introduce two new models labeled under the new retail initiative, ‘MG Select’. These upcoming models—the MG Cyberster and MG M9—are expected to launch in the first half of this year and were recently unveiled at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025.

Key Features of the MG Windsor EV

Platform and Payment Flexibility

The MG Windsor EV is built on the Wuling Cloud EV platform, a solid foundation that supports its performance and features. The vehicle offers customers various payment methods, including the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model. This flexibility allows buyers who prefer not to pay upfront for the battery to choose more manageable payment plans. For those wanting complete ownership, including the battery, the starting price is Rs. 14 lakh (ex-showroom) after a recent price hike of Rs. 50,000.

Variants and Pricing

The MG Windsor comes in several variants, catering to different customer needs:

  • Base Model: Priced at Rs. 14 lakh
  • Mid-Level Exclusive Variant: Priced at Rs. 15 lakh
  • Top-Spec Essence Variant: Priced at Rs. 16 lakh

This variety allows consumers to select a model that best fits their budget and requirements.

Performance Specifications

The Windsor EV is powered by a single electric motor, delivering a robust performance with:

  • Horsepower: 134 hp
  • Torque: 200 Nm

It includes a 38 kWh battery pack that enables a claimed driving range of 332 km on a full charge, making it a suitable choice for both daily commuting and longer trips.

Customer Feedback and Industry Impact

Consumer Reception

Biju Balendran, the Deputy Managing Director of MG Motor India, expressed gratitude towards customers for their overwhelming support, which has led to the production of over 15,000 units. He noted that the Windsor EV offers "a luxurious business-class experience" and highlighted the importance of consumer-friendly initiatives such as the Battery-as-a-Service option, a buyback program, and a lifetime warranty. These features significantly boost consumer confidence in electric vehicles.

Commitment to Quality

As MG Motor India continues to diversify its product offerings, the company remains dedicated to providing quality vehicles while speeding up the development process. This commitment reflects the company’s overall strategy to respond to market demands effectively.

Conclusion

In summary, the MG Windsor EV stands out in the Indian electric vehicle market due to its impressive sales figures, technological features, and customer-focused strategies. With the introduction of new models and ongoing improvements in production capacity, MG Motor India is positioning itself for sustained growth in the competitive EV landscape. As consumer interest in electric vehicles grows, the Windsor EV is set to play a significant role in shaping the future of sustainable transportation in India.
