Microsoft introduces its official Copilot app for macOS.

After a few years of anticipation, Microsoft has finally launched its Copilot AI assistant as an application that can be used on macOS. You can now download this app for free from the Mac App Store.
Before this official launch, there was a brief period when a version of the Copilot app for iPad could be used on the Mac, but that access was soon taken away. Until now, Mac users had to rely on a web-based interface to use Copilot.
Copilot first became available on the web, particularly through web browsers like Microsoft’s own Edge. It then made its way to mobile devices, being offered on iOS and Android last year. Since then, Copilot has been integrated into various Microsoft applications, enhancing their functionality.
With this new Copilot app for macOS, Microsoft is joining the movement started by other platforms like ChatGPT and Anthropic, which have also introduced native apps for macOS. Just like those applications, the Copilot app allows users to invoke a chat box using a keyboard shortcut, making it easy to start a conversation whenever needed. The app can perform a wide range of tasks such as translating or summarizing text, answering questions, preparing reports or documents, solving coding issues, generating scripts, and brainstorming new ideas.
One of the key aspects of Copilot is that it utilizes advanced OpenAI models, including GPT-4 and DALL-E 3, to provide its services. This means that Copilot can not only handle text-based queries but can also create images. Microsoft has heavily invested in OpenAI over recent years, using this partnership as a foundation for Copilot and its broader AI strategy.
However, there are some requirements for using Copilot on macOS. The app is only compatible with Macs equipped with an M1 chip or newer models. Additionally, users must ensure that their operating system is updated to macOS 14 or later in order to access the app’s features.
With this release, Microsoft aims to make Copilot a useful tool for Mac users, providing them with a versatile assistant that can enhance productivity and creativity in many different tasks.
