ToggleMy Riding Journey Begins
Early Days on Two Wheels
My journey with motorcycles started during my college years from 2000 to 2004. I owned an LML Adreno-FX 110CC, which was my first motorcycle. This bike resembled a racing machine and became my reliable companion for monthly trips back home. The distance of about 300 kilometers between Hyderabad and Palvancha was covered with just one brief stop, a feat that many considered challenging. I often left home at midnight, arriving at my destination by morning, singing along the way to keep my spirits high during those lonely rides.
The thrilling experience of riding continues to drive my passion. As I grew more comfortable on my bike, I began planning longer trips. My longest journey then reached 680 kilometers, traveling from Hyderabad to Vishakhapatnam. More recently, I achieved my personal best of 700 kilometers without a break, riding my JAWA 42 from Hampi to the Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore.
The Growth of Adventure Touring
Why Are People Choosing ADV Touring?
The pandemic shifted many people’s perspectives on life. More individuals are now opting for the freedom of the open road, leading to a surge in interest in ADV touring. This style of riding allows motorcyclists to explore various terrains, making it an exciting option for many. However, this leaves many potential riders, especially shorter individuals like myself, wondering where to start.
Transitioning to an ADV Motorcycle
Choosing the Right Bike as a Shorter Rider
As I contemplated upgrading from my cruiser motorcycle to an ADV, I discovered a wide array of options within different price ranges, from 1.5 lakh to 20 lakhs and beyond. As a rider who stands at 5 feet 4 inches tall, I faced unique challenges in finding an accessible and comfortable bike. Initially, I thought models like the Hero X-pulse and Suzuki V-Strom SX were underwhelming, but I later considered the Yezdi Adventure, RE Himalayan 450, KTM Adventure 390, and BMW GS 310—all within my budget.
I started considering used bikes as well. The Honda CB 500 and Benelli TRK 502 were intriguing options, but it made me question why I shouldn’t invest a little more for a super adventure bike instead. This brought models like the Kawasaki Versys 650, Suzuki V-Storm 650, and Triumph Tiger Sport 660 onto my radar.
Evaluating My Options
Comparing Bikes for Comfort and Usability
To make an informed choice, I created a table to compare the bikes regarding comfort and accessibility for my height. I ultimately felt confident with the Benelli TRK 502 and Yezdi Adventure but leaned towards the Suzuki V-Strom 650 and Kawasaki Versys 650. Unfortunately, I learned that service availability and parts for both the Benelli and Suzuki were limited in my area.
Realizing the challenges of owning these higher-end ADV bikes, I opted to learn the fundamentals on a more budget-friendly model. After careful consideration, I decided upon the Yezdi Adventure 2024 as my first foray into the world of ADV touring.
Embracing the Adventure
Understanding the Gear and Technology
The advancements in motorcycle technology make long-distance riding more comfortable and enjoyable. Now, riders can utilize a variety of gear, such as hydration bags and GPS systems, which enhance the riding experience significantly compared to previous years when navigation was more reliant on asking locals for directions. Many motorcycles now come equipped with features that streamline communication, allowing riders to stay connected without interrupting their journey.
By investing in a reliable ADV bike, I feel prepared to take on the adventures that lie ahead, starting with manageable distances and gradually expanding my horizon.
Conclusion: The Joy of Adventure Touring Awaits
Adventure touring combines the thrill of motorcycle riding with the freedom of exploring diverse landscapes. With numerous models available and technological advancements improving the riding experience, there’s no better time to dive into the world of ADV touring. My journey has just begun, and I invite fellow short riders to explore their options and find a motorcycle that fits their needs, assuring that every journey, regardless of distance, is filled with excitement and joy.
I look forward to sharing more of my experiences and insights as I embark on this thrilling adventure into the world of ADV touring. Ride safe and enjoy the journey!
