Ola Electric Unveils Upgraded S1 Gen 3 Electric Scooters

Ola Electric has launched a new generation of its popular electric scooters, the S1 Gen 3 series. This series boasts significant improvements in performance, efficiency, and design, offering four distinct models to suit various needs and budgets. The introductory prices start at ₹79,999, making electric mobility more accessible than ever.

Major Upgrades in the S1 Gen 3 Series

The third-generation S1 scooters represent a substantial leap forward compared to their predecessors. These improvements are spread across several key areas:

Enhanced Motor and Drivetrain

  • Mid-Drive Motor: Ola has replaced the previous hub motor with a mid-drive motor. This change integrates the motor control unit (MCU) directly into the motor, resulting in a 4% increase in efficiency and a remarkable five-fold improvement in reliability.

  • Chain Drive System: The belt drive system has been replaced with a more robust and efficient chain drive. This upgrade delivers a 10% improvement in acceleration, a 2% increase in efficiency, and doubles the lifespan of the drivetrain.

Improved Electronics and Power

  • Simplified Electronics: The scooter’s head unit is now consolidated onto a single board. This simplification reduces manufacturing costs and contributes to greater reliability.

  • Increased Power Output: Peak power has received a significant boost, increasing to 13 kW—a 53% jump from the first-generation models. This translates to improved acceleration and hill-climbing capabilities.

Advanced Braking System

  • Brake-by-Wire Technology & ABS: Ola’s new braking system incorporates brake-by-wire technology and anti-lock braking system (ABS). Brake-by-wire uses sensors to precisely control braking force, providing both electronic and mechanical braking. This system, combined with regenerative braking (Regen), further improves safety and efficiency. Regen harvests kinetic energy during braking, converting it into electricity to charge the battery and extend the scooter’s range by approximately 15%. The S1 Pro+ model offers dual ABS, combining front ABS with rear brake-by-wire for even greater safety.

Refined Design and Comfort

The S1 Gen 3 scooters also feature design enhancements for a more comfortable and stylish ride:

  • Redesigned Grab Handle: The new grab handle offers a more secure and comfortable grip.

  • Longer Seats: The seats have been lengthened to provide increased comfort, particularly on longer rides.

  • Stylish Colors and Accents: The scooters are available in a range of five vibrant colors, adding a touch of personality to the design.

Smart Features with MoveOS 5

Ola’s new MoveOS 5 software update introduces several smart features to enhance the user experience:

  • DIY Mode: This feature allows users to perform basic diagnostics and troubleshooting of minor issues, reducing reliance on service centers.

  • Smart Park & Smartwatch App: The Smart Park feature simplifies parking, while the smartwatch app offers convenient remote control functionality.

  • Road Trip Mode & Bharat Mode: These modes optimize the scooter’s performance for different terrains and riding styles, catering to the diverse conditions found across India.

  • SOS Alerts: In the event of an accident, the scooter automatically sends SOS alerts to pre-designated emergency contacts.

The MoveOS 5 beta release is scheduled for mid-February 2025 for existing S1 users.
