One NZ Launches Nationwide Satellite Text Messaging Service Powered by Starlink

One NZ has become the first telecommunications provider in New Zealand to offer nationwide satellite text messaging, powered by SpaceX’s Starlink network. This groundbreaking service aims to provide connectivity to even the most remote areas of the country, where traditional cellular signals are often weak or nonexistent.

This development is particularly significant for New Zealand, a country with vast rural landscapes and challenging terrain. By leveraging Starlink’s satellite constellation, One NZ can now offer reliable communication services to customers regardless of their location.

While this service promises to bridge the connectivity gap for rural communities, it comes with some caveats. Text message delivery via Starlink is significantly slower compared to traditional cellular networks, with messages potentially taking several minutes to be sent or received. For this reason, the company still recommends carrying a personal locator beacon for emergencies in remote areas.

Currently, the service is limited to a select number of compatible devices, including the latest Samsung Galaxy and OPPO smartphones. However, the company plans to expand device compatibility in the future and eventually offer voice calling and data services via Starlink.

One NZ is offering the satellite text messaging service for free to existing customers on paid-monthly plans. Pricing details for new customers or those on different contract types have not yet been announced.

This initiative marks a significant step towards universal connectivity in New Zealand and highlights the growing role of satellite technology in bridging the digital divide. Starlink’s partnerships with telecommunications companies around the world, including in Japan, Peru, Switzerland, and Chile, demonstrate the increasing adoption of satellite-based communication solutions.
