Qualcomm’s New APs Enable Up to 8 Years of Android and Security Updates for Certain Android Phones
Qualcomm recently shared exciting news about its latest technology that allows certain Android phones to receive up to eight years of updates for the operating system and security features. This initiative is part of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform, and it also extends to new smartphones that use the Snapdragon 8 and Snapdragon 7 platforms. The aim is to enable consumers to make the most out of their devices over a longer period.
Qualcomm, based in San Diego, recognizes the importance of ensuring that users get the latest Android experience. By offering this extended support, they are making sure that phone manufacturers can keep their devices up-to-date with the latest Android versions for eight consecutive years. This marks a significant improvement compared to previous offerings, as it is the longest period of consistent support Qualcomm’s technology has provided for any mobile device.
Chris Patrick, the Senior Vice President and General Manager of mobile handsets at Qualcomm Technologies, expressed enthusiasm saying they are thrilled to be collaborating closely with Google. This teamwork will help ensure users have access to the most recent Android updates, leading to improved experiences for everyone. They expect to see more phone manufacturers rolling out devices with this extended Android support soon.
The eight-year support period covers both Android operating system updates and other essential software updates. According to Qualcomm, these new devices will start appearing in markets by the end of 2024, with some initial Android models powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite AP utilizing Android 15.
While this extended support benefits many upcoming phones, it is ultimately up to each manufacturer to decide whether their specific models will receive these eight years of updates. Qualcomm has reported that many manufacturers are already showing interest in keeping their devices supported for longer durations.
Seang Chau, a Vice President and General Manager at Android Platform, mentioned that Qualcomm’s efforts to extend the lifespan of Android devices are crucial for enhancing smartphone longevity. This partnership helps manufacturers to update devices more efficiently, leading to a more secure and long-lasting Android experience for users.
On the downside, Qualcomm stated that phones already released with older Snapdragon processors, which do not include the Snapdragon 8 Elite, won’t be eligible for these extended updates. However, the company is committed to working with manufacturers to ensure the software support needs for older devices are still addressed.
Some of the first Android models to offer the full eight years of system and security updates include the Samsung Galaxy S24 series and the Pixel 8 series. Prior to these models, the Galaxy S23 series was only eligible for four years of Android updates along with five years of security updates.
