Raleigh Child Saves Friend from Choking Using Heimlich Maneuver

A young boy in Raleigh, North Carolina, became an unexpected hero when he saved his friend from choking during recess at school. The incident involved two students from Raleigh Oak Charter Academy, second graders Jayceon Branch and Donye Moore, who were playing basketball on the playground when it occurred.
On that day, while they were engaged in their game, Donye took a break to eat a granola bar. After some time, things took a turn when he started to choke on the food. The distressing scene unfolded on the school’s surveillance cameras, capturing the moment Donye began to bend over and struggle to breathe. Jayceon quickly noticed his friend’s predicament and rushed to help.
In a state of panic, Donye attempted to ask Jayceon for help by saying “hold on,” but was unable to get the words out due to his choking. Jayceon, however, reacted promptly, employing a life-saving technique he had seen before. Through a series of abdominal thrusts, he managed to help expel the food lodged in Donye’s throat.
Jayceon, reflecting on the event, admitted he learned the lifesaving maneuver from YouTube. He had seen a video where a teacher assisted a choking student, which inspired him to take action when his friend needed help. “I didn’t know he was actually, actually choking so I just did my thing,” Jayceon said modestly.
Eric Johnson, the executive director of Raleigh Oak Charter School, praised Jayceon’s quick thinking and readiness to assist his friend. “We’re really proud of him,” Johnson expressed, highlighting the importance of kids being aware and prepared to help others in emergencies.
Donye’s reaction to being saved by his friend was one of sheer surprise. “I felt surprised,” he said, showcasing the relief and gratitude he felt towards Jayceon. Their parents, too, were amazed by the turn of events. Jayceon’s father, Oluefami Branch, mentioned that he panicked when he first received a call from the school, fearing something serious had happened. “I was hoping this time, I was like ‘oh my gosh, don’t let this be bad,'” he noted, but the voicemail brought him good news.
Both families gathered to watch the footage of the incident, still in disbelief over the events that unfolded. Donye’s mother, Aja Moore, expressed her gratitude that Jayceon knew what to do in such a critical moment. “At first, I wasn’t understanding that he had to be given the Heimlich maneuver or anything like that. It was surprising. I’m just thankful his friend was able to demonstrate that on him,” she stated.
Despite the scary moment, the bond between Jayceon and Donye has grown even stronger. Now, they continue to play together, reminiscent of a childhood friendship that can withstand challenges.
To honor Jayceon’s bravery, Raleigh Oak Charter Academy plans to have a celebration at the school, recognizing his heroic actions and the lessons learned in terms of being prepared for emergencies. This story not only highlights the quick thinking of a nine-year-old but also emphasizes the importance of being trained in basic lifesaving skills, which can make a significant impact in critical situations.
