Rival Bakery with 31 Locations Gains Popularity as Fans Claim It’s ’10x Better’

A new bakery chain is gaining popularity in England, competing with the well-known Greggs. This bakery, called Coughlans, has been around for 87 years and has recently opened many locations. In total, they now have 31 stores spread across London, Surrey, Kent, and East Sussex.
Last year, Coughlans received a significant investment from Romesh Ranganathan, a TV presenter who bought a share in the company. His financial support and the publicity from his involvement might help Coughlans grow into one of the leading bakery chains in the country.
Fans of Greggs have started to share their excitement about Coughlans on social media. Some people claim that they enjoy Coughlans products much more than those from Greggs. One social media user even stated, “Coughlans Bakery is 10 times better than Greggs.” Another echoed this sentiment after trying Coughlans sausage roll, saying it was definitely superior to Greggs. There’s a lot of enthusiasm among customers, with many praising the taste of Coughlans’ offerings.
Although Coughlans has significantly expanded its production facilities over the years, they are not operating 24 hours a day like Greggs yet. In just four years, they have grown their number of stores from 19 to 31, and there are plans to open more through franchising. Romesh Ranganathan aims to help elevate the Coughlans brand even further.
Both Coughlans and Greggs launched their well-loved vegan sausage rolls in 2019, leading to a friendly competition. The two bakeries have since introduced vegan steak bakes, continuing to compete for the attention of bakery lovers.
A journalist from MyLDN decided to taste-test both bakeries to see which one was better. When they described the Greggs vegan steak bake, they weren’t too impressed, noting it lacked the chunky texture one would expect, calling it more of a mince pastry. They rated it a 3 out of 5, expressing relief that they didn’t have to wait in a long line for it.
In contrast, when they tried the vegan bake from Coughlans, they were much more enthusiastic. They remarked that it resembled real beef in flavor and texture, pointing out the juicy seitan steak and rich gravy, as well as the excellent addition of mushrooms. They awarded Coughlans a rating of 4 out of 5, clearly favoring it.
