Samsung is preparing to unveil its sleek and ultra-thin smartphone, the Galaxy S25 Edge. This new model was briefly teased during the recent Galaxy S25 series announcement. While the company has been somewhat quiet about this flagship device, there have been numerous leaks providing insight into its specifications and features—the excitement surrounding this device continues to grow.

The Galaxy S25 Edge is expected to be one of the thinnest smartphones available, with a rumored thickness of just 5.84mm. Making a phone that slim involves intricate engineering, and with this reduced thickness, there are some key considerations to keep in mind. Typically, a very slim design may impact both battery life and performance. Additionally, such devices can be more prone to bending, particularly if they are constructed from similar materials as thicker models. However, Samsung appears to be addressing these concerns seriously, emphasizing the importance of durability in their design process.

At this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Annika Bizon, Samsung’s UK Marketing Director, reassured attendees that the S25 Edge would not only be ultra-thin but also robust. She acknowledged the challenges of combining these two features but confirmed that the company is committed to ensuring that the durability of the device matches its appealing design. Bizon stated, “With anything slim, durability has to come as part of the package. Those are the two features of the Edge that are exciting for us.”

Recent smartphone history has made consumers wary of bending issues, particularly following the infamous “bendgate” controversy with the iPhone 6 Plus in 2014. Thus, Samsung’s efforts to assure potential buyers about the S25 Edge’s durability are understandable, especially given that this model is part of its premium S series lineup.

So, how is Samsung planning to achieve a combination of a slim profile and strong durability for the Galaxy S25 Edge? One significant factor appears to be the choice of materials for the phone’s rear cover. Reports indicate that the S25 Edge may use a ceramic back panel instead of the more commonly used Gorilla Glass Victus 2. This shift to ceramic is critical as it is generally stronger and more resistant to drops and impacts, which is especially valuable in a device that is designed to be slim.

While ceramic is denser than glass, it typically won’t add too much weight. A recent report suggests that the S25 Edge may weigh approximately 162 grams—comparable to the heavier Galaxy S25 Plus, which is 7.3mm thick. This further strengthens the likelihood of Samsung opting for a ceramic back, as the density might provide additional protection without significantly increasing weight. This also explains why Samsung has kept the S25 Edge under wraps at recent events, allowing limited public access to prevent scrutiny of the rear material.

The competition for the Galaxy S25 Edge is heating up as well; Apple is rumored to release the iPhone 17 Air (or Slim) later this year. Similar to the S25 Edge, it is expected that the upcoming iPhone could also feature a ceramic shield for added durability. Such innovations in smartphone materials and designs emphasize how manufacturers are continually striving to balance aesthetics and functionality without compromising on durability.
