OnePlus’s New Health Laboratory: A Leap Forward in Wearable Health Tech

OnePlus, a global technology brand, has opened a state-of-the-art Health Laboratory in Guangdong, China, marking a significant investment in wearable health technology. This follows the launch of the OnePlus Watch 2 in 2024, which showed promise in the health and fitness tracking market after a less successful first attempt in 2020. The new lab aims to accelerate innovation in this field, ultimately leading to more accurate and comprehensive health monitoring features in future OnePlus devices.

The Facility: A Hub for Health Research and Development

The 4,840-square-meter facility houses over 100 pieces of professional research and development equipment. It’s designed to simulate real-world conditions for accurate testing of various health-related metrics. The lab is divided into several specialized areas, each focusing on a different aspect of health and fitness:

  • Sports Performance: A large area (900 square meters) dedicated to simulating various aerobic exercises like running, cycling, and rowing. This includes professional-grade equipment such as treadmills, cycling platforms, and rowing machines, plus advanced motion capture systems to analyze movement and performance data. The aim is to better understand how different activities affect the body and improve the accuracy of exercise tracking on smartwatches.

  • Ball Sports Analysis: A 1,000-square-meter space equipped with 24 infrared cameras to track body movements during sports like basketball and badminton. This detailed tracking helps refine algorithms for analyzing motion and performance during these activities.

  • Environmental Simulation: The lab can simulate high-altitude conditions, crucial for testing the accuracy of blood oxygen and altitude monitoring features in wearables.

  • Sleep Research: A dedicated sleep lab with three testing rooms allows researchers to conduct in-depth studies on sleep quality, using advanced monitoring equipment such as millimeter-wave radar and multi-parameter human body sensors. This enables improved sleep tracking capabilities in future OnePlus smartwatches.

  • Cardiovascular Health: This area focuses on research related to heart health, utilizing various monitoring technologies to improve accuracy and reliability.

  • Biochemical Laboratory: This section focuses on developing and testing new chemical components for sensors to optimize accuracy and reliability of health tracking capabilities.

  • Optical Laboratory: Concentrates on evaluating sensor hardware and design for better performance and longer life.

The lab’s design also focuses on user experience, creating a comfortable and familiar environment to encourage accurate data collection during testing. This emphasis on user experience extends to all aspects of the lab’s structure.

A Collaborative Approach to Innovation

OnePlus isn’t working in isolation. The Health Laboratory actively collaborates with over 30 institutions, including universities, research institutes, and healthcare facilities. This collaborative approach fosters a rich exchange of ideas and leverages expertise from diverse fields. The lab actively participates in industry conferences to further its knowledge base and engage in discussion with experts in the field.

This collaboration has resulted in over 50 industry-university-research initiatives and more than 100 patents, many focused on improving the accuracy of sensor technology. Examples include advancements in PPG materials (for heart rate and blood oxygen monitoring), ECG electrode materials, and light-shielding solutions to reduce interference and improve measurement accuracy.

Focus on Preventative Health

The overarching goal of the Health Laboratory is to improve preventative healthcare. By focusing on accurate and comprehensive health data collection, the lab aims to allow users to better understand and manage their health proactively. This proactive approach aligns with the overarching goal of preventative healthcare, allowing individuals to take steps towards improved health before the onset of illness. The data and insights gained should contribute towards more accurate wellness tracking and earlier detection of potential health issues.
