Tecno Spark Slim Review: A Sleek Design That Captivates

Smartphones have come a long way, and today’s market is filled with heavier models that can weigh around 220 grams. This weight may not seem excessive, but for those who travel often or have active lifestyles, a lightweight smartphone is much more desirable. Recently, companies like Motorola and Vivo have made strides by introducing sleek and slender phones. However, Tecno is set to raise the bar with their upcoming device, the Tecno Spark Slim. It is advertised as the “slimmest phone in the industry,” boasting an impressive 5,200mAh battery.
Although still in development, the Tecno Spark Slim, with its thickness of only 5.75mm, felt incredibly light in my hands during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where I got a chance to try it out. However, similar ultra-slim devices often come with their own set of challenges, which I’ll explain further.
What Makes Tecno Spark Slim Unique?
The Tecno Spark Slim stands out, not just because of its slim profile but also due to its futuristic design. Right from the first look, the phone gives off a sci-fi vibe, thanks to its metallic back and shiny finish. The camera design is noticeable too; it has two impressive 50MP camera cutouts, creating a unique camera module at the back. The camera bump is prominent but does not significantly increase the phone’s overall thickness.
Weighing in at just 146 grams, the Spark Slim feels great in hand and pocket compared to other smartphones. For comparison, the iPhone 16, which features a 6.1-inch screen, weighs 170 grams and measures 7.8mm thick. Even one of the market’s slimmest phones, the OPPO Find N5, measures 4.21mm thick when unfolded but is not widely available in India.
How Did Tecno Achieve Such a Slim Design?
To create this sleek design, Tecno claims to have developed custom hardware components. For example, the Spark Slim features a “custom Type-C port” that traditionally keeps USB-C’s functionalities while enabling a thinner build. This approach is similar to what OPPO has done with the Find N5.
Furthermore, the design includes a battery specifically made for the Spark Slim. Even with its lightweight frame, it has a powerful 5,200mAh battery along with 44W fast charging. Interestingly, the current design does not come with a SIM slot to keep its slim profile intact.
Specifications and Features
Even though the Tecno Spark Slim is still a concept phone, it boasts some attractive specifications. It features a 6.78-inch AMOLED display that has a 3D curved design with a refresh rate of 144Hz and a peak brightness of up to 4,500 nits at 1.5K resolution. During my brief experience with it indoors, I found the visibility excellent. The curved screen enhances the overall elegance of the phone. The final commercial model may even include a thin protective layer to improve durability.
The phone also comes equipped with a 13MP front camera. However, some details regarding the software and its included AI features are still unclear at this point.
Challenges of Ultra-Slim Smartphones
The Tecno Spark Slim shows significant promise for users who prefer compact devices. However, it’s essential to consider some challenges that come with ultra-slim smartphones. For instance, finding a suitable phone case can be tricky since there are limited options tailored for such slim profiles. Also, mounting these thin devices on tripods or holders could present compatibility issues.
Durability is another critical factor. Many users worry about whether slim phones can withstand daily wear and tear. How well the Spark Slim performs in terms of durability will have a significant impact on its success.
This hands-on experience with the Tecno Spark Slim has highlighted what could be a breakthrough in smartphone design. As users increasingly opt for lightweight and modern devices, the Tecno Spark Slim may indeed stand out in a crowded market.
