The Google Pixel Watch 3 Can Alert for Assistance If Your Pulse Stops

A company’s best strategy for boosting its product sales is to convince users that it is vital for their everyday life. Google seems to be following this idea with its latest Pixel Watch 3. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new feature called Loss of Pulse Detection for the smartwatch. This feature was announced alongside the watch but had to wait for FDA approval before being activated. Once the feature is available next month, the Pixel Watch 3 will be able to call for help if it detects that your heart rate has stopped.
This feature has been operational in Europe since the watch was first launched last fall, but it is making its debut in the U.S. now. The way Loss of Pulse Detection works is straightforward: if your heart rate drops to zero, the watch will immediately switch to emergency mode. It will start a countdown and sound an alarm. If you don’t respond within a few seconds, the watch will automatically contact emergency services, but only if you have previously set this up through an Android device.
Google emphasizes that the watch will be capable of telling the difference between a serious heart issue and someone simply taking the watch off. This should minimize false alarms. The technology behind this feature includes an AI-driven algorithm known as multi-check, which analyzes data from the heart-rate sensor to recognize when a situation is pressing. Google claims to have rigorously tested this algorithm using extensive data and has also consulted with various experts, including cardiologists and emergency medical professionals.
In the past, I unintentionally activated the Fall Detection feature on an earlier version of the Pixel Watch. It happened when I misplaced my footing while hiking. Such false alerts can occur, which is why there is a countdown and alert system that allows users to cancel the call if it’s not necessary. Nevertheless, it is anticipated that Google will actively promote this new safety feature, especially considering that the Apple Watch does not offer something similar.
With features like Loss of Pulse Detection, Google’s Pixel Watch 3 is pushing the envelope in smartwatch safety technology. The hope is that many users will see this communication and emergency response functionality as an essential part of their daily lives. By offering such valuable features, Google aims to create a strong appeal for consumers, establishing the Pixel Watch 3 not just as a tech gadget, but as a necessary tool for health and safety.
