Toyota is bringing back two of its famous sports cars: the MR2 and the Celica. Following the successful reintroduction of the Toyota Supra and Toyota 86, the company is excited to add more sporty models to its collection. These new cars will join the performance lineup that already includes the GR Yaris and the GR Supra. Additionally, Toyota is working on a new flagship vehicle for its luxury brand Lexus, which will take the place of the well-known LFA supercar.
The MR2 and Celica have a rich history in Toyota’s lineup of sports cars, and both will be powered by a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine known as the G20E. This new engine is designed to produce over 400 horsepower for regular road use, with even more powerful versions for motorsport that could exceed 600 horsepower.
The MR2 will feature a mid-engine design, which means its engine will be placed behind the seats for better handling and speed. A concept version of the MR2 was showcased at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, where the engine was positioned similarly to other mid-engine sports cars. If all goes to plan, we might see the production version of the MR2 by 2028, following the concept design.
On the other hand, the Celica will have the same G20E engine but will be set up differently, placed under the front hood and equipped with four-wheel drive. One exciting aspect of the Celica’s return is its potential involvement in the World Rally Championship (WRC). It may even bear the “GT-Four” name, a nod to its legacy in the WRC during the 1980s and 1990s, when Celica models competed fiercely.
In addition to these sporty revivals, Toyota’s luxury arm, Lexus, is busy developing a new supercar to take over from the LFA. This new model is expected to be powered by a turbocharged V8 engine, generating between 500 and 600 horsepower. Reports suggest that hybrid technology will also be incorporated into this exciting new vehicle.
Photos have already emerged of the Lexus supercar prototype, which is gearing up to enter the GT3 racing series in 2026. This prototype has been seen testing at major racing tracks such as Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring, showing that it is being carefully prepared for competition. Importantly, the road version of this supercar will be released before the racing variant becomes available.
