Warner Bros. Games is closing down three of its video game studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. San Diego. This decision comes as part of a restructuring effort within the company. Reports indicate that the studio’s latest project, a game based on Wonder Woman, has also been canceled.
A representative from Warner Bros. Games clarified that these closures do not reflect the talent or hard work of the teams involved. JB Perrette, who oversees games and streaming for Warner Bros., sent a memo to staff highlighting that many recent game releases did not meet expectations. He emphasized the need for significant changes in the company’s structure to focus on fewer but more successful game franchises.
Recently, the president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, David Haddad, stepped down after a decade in charge of the company. Additionally, last December, nearly 100 developers were let go from Warner Games Montreal. These job losses followed a major financial write-off by Warner Bros Discovery, which reported more than $100 million lost due to the poor performance of the free-to-play game MultiVersus. News has confirmed that MultiVersus will be removed from sale, and its online features will be disabled starting in May 2025.
Overall, these changes indicate a shift in Warner Bros. Games’ strategy, prioritizing fewer projects that can achieve greater success, rather than a wider range of releases. As the company moves forward, many are watching to see how these adjustments will shape its future in the gaming industry.
