Preparing for the Action
In anticipation of Doom: The Dark Ages, I’ve revisited Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal to sharpen my gaming skills and gear up for the impending battles. Both titles are exceptional first-person shooters. However, Doom Eternal has faced criticism for its pacing, particularly due to its numerous collectibles that slow down the fast-paced action that players expect: the exhilarating demon-slaying.
The Double-Edged Sword of Collectibles
Collectibles in games often divide opinion. On one hand, many players find them frustrating as they disrupt the flow of gameplay and require hunting around for hidden items. These items frequently provide lore and background, which, while interesting, don’t necessarily add to the gameplay experience.
On the other hand, the Doom series offers a unique twist by linking collectibles directly to the game’s progression system. By gathering collectibles, players can earn points that allow them to enhance their suits, weapons, runes, and perks. This innovative approach ensures that collectibles serve a practical purpose, encouraging players to seek them out.
A Closer Look at Doom Eternal
In Doom Eternal, the requirement for upgrades is higher compared to its 2016 predecessor. While Doom (2016) prioritized fast-paced, run-and-gun gameplay, Eternal incorporates more platforming elements, leading to larger maps filled with intricate pathways. Players must jump, climb, and swing to navigate these expansive environments.
As a result, missions can sometimes feel prolonged, particularly for completionists eager to uncover secret soundtracks, collectibles, and complete Slayer Gates. Despite this, I’ve enjoyed playing Doom Eternal. The addition of the Meat Hook feature for the Super Shotgun is incredibly engaging, the Fortress of Doom acts as a fascinating hub, and the platforming aspects add much-needed variety to the missions. However, the need to frequently delay action to hunt for upgrades can feel disruptive.
What to Expect from Doom: The Dark Ages
With Doom: The Dark Ages focusing more on melee combat and an immersive experience, I’m hopeful that the missions will be more streamlined. Early previews suggest that this latest entry will feature the largest and most epic campaign we’ve seen in the franchise to date. However, I wonder if that means traversing barren landscapes or if we will encounter densely packed environments.
In a recent interview, the creative director of Doom: The Dark Ages, Hugo Martin, mentioned that while the maps will be larger and filled with more enemies, the gameplay will feel faster and more intuitive. The streamlined controls aim to simplify the experience rather than add to its complexity. The director hinted at a traversal mechanic that could feel almost akin to web-slinging, promoting quick movement through expansive areas.
The Importance of Pacing
As we look forward to Doom: The Dark Ages, one of my main hopes is that the game will successfully avoid the pacing troubles seen in Doom Eternal. If it can maintain an exhilarating rhythm while offering dynamic gameplay, I genuinely believe it could surpass Doom (2016) as the best title in the series. With the release date fast approaching, fans are ecstatic to dive into this new chapter of the franchise.
