Xiaomi 15 Ultra Review: Familiar Design, Enhanced Performance

Xiaomi has launched its new 15 series smartphones globally, which includes two models: the Xiaomi 15 and the 15 Ultra. Both of these phones are equipped with the powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC, giving them similar software experiences and processing capabilities. However, the standout feature that sets them apart is the camera system.
The Xiaomi 15 Ultra continues the tradition of its predecessor, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, featuring a quad-camera arrangement within a large circular module that occupies a significant portion of the back panel. This design has been slightly tweaked in terms of sensor positions and cutouts, likely to give it a fresh look, although some might find the asymmetrical layout unappealing. Additionally, there’s a new color option that aims to make the 15 Ultra appear more like a digital camera than a typical smartphone, which could attract photography lovers.
A Familiar Design with Enhanced Features
When comparing the Xiaomi 15 Ultra to its predecessor, the 14 Ultra, there aren’t many noticeable differences in design. Both models have similar camera modules and button placements. Unlike some competitors, like the iPhone 16 series and Find X8 Pro, Xiaomi has not introduced a camera slider feature. However, if you opt for the special Photography Kit for the Ultra model, you’ll gain access to physical buttons for switching modes and zooming, which adds extra convenience.
The color choices for this model are mostly unchanged, but the new Blue option features an impressive aerospace-grade glass fiber and PU leather finish, reminiscent of classic Leica cameras. While the new Xiaomi 15 Ultra is slightly heavier and thicker than its predecessor, the weight distribution feels more balanced. This may vary from person to person, but for users who prefer larger screens, such as myself, it offers a comfortable grip. There is room for future improvements in reducing the device’s weight, though.
Performance Boost with Snapdragon 8 Elite
Beyond the design, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, which promises significant performance improvements. Although we need to test it thoroughly once the phone is available, the demonstrated capabilities of this chipset in devices like the iQOO 13 and Realme GT 7 Pro assure us that the Xiaomi 15 Ultra will handle gaming, everyday tasks, and multi-tasking without issues.
Even in Samsung’s recent S25 series, we’ve seen notable performance enhancements, showing a clear trend of how Qualcomm’s chipsets elevate device capabilities.
Impressive Camera Features with Leica
Xiaomi has teamed up with Leica for the third consecutive year to elevate smartphone photography. Their collaboration goes beyond software; it includes Leica hardware such as Summilux lenses for superior image quality in various lighting conditions. The 15 Ultra showcases three 50MP cameras (for primary, ultra-wide, and telephoto shots) and a new 200MP telephoto lens with 4.3x optical zoom. Although the primary camera maintains a 1-inch sensor, it now features a fixed f/1.6 aperture instead of a variable one.
While I haven’t had an opportunity to conduct a full camera test, my earlier experience with the Xiaomi 14 Ultra leads me to believe that the 15 Ultra won’t disappoint in still photography. Video recording has also been enhanced, with support for 10-bit log recording across all four cameras, which should please many content creators. My initial impressions indicate improved video stability, addressing a common concern.
All the captured images appear vibrant and clear on its 6.73-inch LTPO AMOLED screen, featuring a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision support. Despite the impressive display, I believe there is still a need for manufacturers to implement anti-glare coatings like Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra offers, enhancing visibility in various lighting conditions.
AI Features in HyperOS 2
The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is equipped with Android 15-based HyperOS 2, which feels faster and more seamless compared to its predecessor. Its AI capabilities are impressive, although they align closely with features offered by other brands. New tools like AI writing, speech recognition, and an eraser tool are becoming common in recent smartphones.
Despite these enhancements, Samsung continues to lead the AI innovation race. The Galaxy S25 series showcases abilities, such as audio-enhancing during recording and easy slow-motion capture, which are incredibly useful for users. OPPO is making strides as well, introducing features like O Connect+ for seamless sharing between devices. Xiaomi is also focusing on bridging the gap between Android and iOS with its improved Xiaomi HyperConnect.
Final Observations
Overall, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra certainly appears promising, armed with an improved camera and a robust chipset. While it maintains a familiar design, I expect it will deliver high-quality shots, similar to its predecessor. The camera upgrades, particularly for video recording, are positive steps. The software experience is also encouraging, with new AI features on the horizon that could set it apart from other Xiaomi devices.
Xiaomi has announced that the Xiaomi 15 and 15 Ultra will be launched in India on March 11th, providing eager customers an opportunity to experience these new devices first-hand.
