Envisioning the Design of the Upcoming Folding iPhone Based on Recent Leaks
As more discussions emerge about Apple’s innovations, there’s growing speculation that a foldable iPhone could be introduced much sooner than the much-anticipated Apple Car. Many believe that we are more likely to see a foldable iPhone next year, particularly with increasing rumors surrounding the upcoming iPhone 17 Air, which is expected to pave the way for this innovative device.
Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has been a notable source of information regarding Apple’s plans, including a potential folding iPhone. While Apple hasn’t confirmed any details, the fragments of information circulating provide insights into what this foldable device could feature.
Kuo estimates that the cost of the foldable iPhone could range from $2,000 to $2,500. While this price point may seem high, it aligns with the costs of competing devices like the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the Galaxy Z Fold 6, both starting around $1,800. Customers often find themselves spending at least $2,000 when opting for higher storage configurations, generally starting from 256GB.
In terms of design, the anticipated foldable iPhone is expected to follow a book-style format rather than a flip-phone design. It may come with a 7.8-inch inner display that boasts a “crease-free” technology, alongside a smaller 5.5-inch outer screen. Even though this outer display is less expansive compared to some Samsung models, it may be wider, offering a more user-friendly experience. When opened, the device could measure between 4 mm and 4.8 mm in thickness, a feat likely facilitated by the foundational design laid out by the standard iPhone 17 Air.
Furthermore, there are indications that Touch ID may return, potentially implemented as a side button, much like the recent models from competitors such as the Z Fold 6 and Oppo Find N5. This could allow for quick access without needing to unlock the phone fully. Interestingly, Kuo suggests that Face ID might not be included due to constraints regarding thickness and internal space. For photography, the foldable iPhone is expected to feature a dual-lens camera setup with a single front-facing camera, a design choice that many, including myself, might prefer to the internal front-facing cameras used in some existing models.
Kuo has also indicated that the final specifications will be determined in the second quarter of this year, with the project anticipated to officially kick off in the third quarter, leading to production potentially starting by the year’s end. Plans for a second-generation foldable iPhone are also in the works, aiming for mass production in 2027. This timeline marks a thrilling moment for iPhone enthusiasts who may be feeling envious of the diversity of options available in the Android market.
