India has seen a substantial increase in electric vehicle (EV) adoption over the past five years, with over 3.6 million EVs registered across the country. This represents 3.38% of the total vehicle registrations during the same period, indicating a growing shift towards sustainable transportation.
Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the frontrunner in EV registrations, with over 665,000 EVs registered in the last five years. Maharashtra follows with over 439,000 EV registrations, while Karnataka comes in third with over 350,000.
Other states that have shown significant EV adoption include Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Bihar, Delhi, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Kerala. However, some states, such as Sikkim, Lakshadweep, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Ladakh, have reported significantly lower EV registration numbers, highlighting the disparity in adoption across different regions.
While the overall EV market share in India remains relatively small, the increasing number of registrations signifies a positive trend towards cleaner mobility solutions. Factors such as improved infrastructure, supportive government policies, and increased consumer awareness are expected to further accelerate EV adoption in the coming years.
The data reflects both progress and areas for improvement in India’s journey towards sustainable transportation. Continued efforts to promote EV adoption across all regions will be crucial in achieving the country’s ambitious goals for a greener future.
